Modelling Oceanographic Data with the Three-dimensional Voronoi Diagram

چکیده

Managing oceanographic data with traditional geographical information systems (GIS) is a difficult task because these systems have been primarily designed for land-based applications. The main problem is that the nature of objects at sea is completely different from the nature of objects found on the land: at sea most objects are represented by unconnected points that can have threedimensional coordinates, the datasets have 'abnormal' distribution and the objects tend to change position over time. We propose in this paper using a spatial model based on the three-dimensional Voronoi diagram (VD) to handle topological relationships between objects. We present the main properties of the 3D VD, algorithms to construct and modify it, and show how some 3D GIS operations are greatly simplified when a spatial model is built upon it

Modelling three-dimensional geoscientific fields with the Voronoi diagram and its dual

Fields as found in the geosciences have properties that are not usually found in other disciplines: the phenomena studied are often three-dimensional, they tend to change continuously over time, and the collection of samples to study the phenomena is problematic, which often results in highly anisotropic distributions of samples. In the GIS community, raster structures (voxels or octrees) are t...

Simultaneous storage of primal and dual three-dimensional subdivisions

We propose a new general-purpose data structure useful for a variety of three-dimensional applications. The data structure has the characteristic of storing simultaneously the primal and dual subdivisions of a three-dimensional manifold. We argue in this paper that storing both subdivisions, for instance the Voronoi diagram and the Delaunay tetrahedralization, can be beneficial for many applica...

The Kinetic 3D Voronoi Diagram: A Tool for Simulating Environmental Processes

Simulations of environmental processes are usually modelled by partial differential equations that are approximated with numerical methods, based on regular grids. An attractive alternative for simulating a fluid flow is the FreeLagrange Method (FLM). In this paper, I discuss the use of the FLM—based on the Voronoi diagram (VD)—for the modelling of fluid flow in three dimensions (e.g. the movem...

Quasi-triangulation and interworld data structure in three dimensions

It is well-known that the Voronoi diagram of points and the power diagram for weighted points, such as spheres, are cell complexes, and their respective dual structures, i.e. the Delaunay triangulation and the regular triangulation, are simplicial complexes. Hence, the topologies of these diagrams are usually stored in their dual complexes using a very compact data structure of arrays. The topo...
